A Weekend in the Catskills with Barbour

Hemlock Neversink was the perfect backdrop for a weekend of quiet hikes and timeless jackets.

Barbour recently organized a memorable trip upstate to Hemlock Neversink, a serene sanctuary nestled in the Catskills. With misty mornings by the river, peaceful hikes through pine forests, and evenings spent by a crackling fire, it was a true nature lover’s escape. Naturally, I had two Barbour classics by my side: the Beaufort and the Bedale jackets.

The Beaufort jacket is a true Barbour icon, introduced in the 1980s. Known for its timeless blend of utility and style, this waxed cotton jacket features a game pocket, a corduroy collar, and a durable finish that’s perfect for the countryside but easily transitions to everyday wear.

I reached for the Beaufort on Saturday morning as we set out to explore the Hemlock property. The air was crisp and damp, but the Beaufort’s waxed cotton provided ample protection against the chill. Layered over a Sunspel lambswool sweater, it kept me warm and cozy, while its deep pockets held my scarf and essentials. As we trekked along the Neversink River, the Beaufort felt like a trusted companion, providing both warmth and comfort as the mist hung low over the water.

Later that afternoon, I swapped the Beaufort jacket for the Bedale, which offered a more tailored fit for a more active outing. Originally designed as a riding jacket, the Bedale is slightly shorter and trimmer than the Beaufort, giving it a modern, streamlined feel. The Bedale was perfect for our visit to the Hemlock Goat Sanctuary and subsequent hike. It’s practical yet polished—ideal for moving through the woods or stopping for a coffee afterward. By the time we returned to Hemlock, the Bedale had developed a few smudges from brushing past branches, a reminder of the rugged beauty of the countryside. These marks, I told myself, are exactly what makes a Barbour jacket so special.

By the end of the trip, I couldn’t help but feel more attached to both jackets. They weren’t just practical pieces for a weekend getaway; they became part of the story. The Beaufort and Bedale aren’t merely about protection from the elements; they’re about stepping into moments that matter—wearing something that will last as long as the memories you're creating.
